On 26 June 2026, Transparency International Georgia lodged another application with the European Court of Human Rights. The case concerns violations of the rights of prominent journalist, civil society activist, and now politician, Nanuka Zhorzholiani.

Nanuka Zhorzholiani was found guilty of an administrative offence and sentenced to three days of administrative detention by a court controlled by a compliant and corrupt judicial clan loyal to Ivanishvili. She was punished solely for participating in a peaceful protest held on the sidewalk outside the Parliament building.

The domestic court decisions are in clear breach of the rights to freedom of assembly and expression, respect for private life, and a fair trial, as guaranteed by the Constitution of Georgia and the European Convention on Human Rights. They are also contradicted by video footage recorded by the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ own cameras, which clearly shows that the demonstrators gathered on the sidewalk in front of Parliament, including Nanuka Zhorzholiani, were not obstructing pedestrian movement or otherwise interfering with the rights of others.

Nanuka Zhorzholiani’s case is the twelfth application that Transparency International Georgia has submitted to the European Court of Human Rights in the past year alone.

We will continue to defend the rights of citizens before international judicial bodies whenever those rights are violated, as the pursuit of justice through the domestic courts has become impossible under the Ivanishvili regime.
